Founded in 1921 by William Frank Griffin, Frank Griffin Oil Company, Inc. began in Russellville as a bulk wholesaler of fuel and petroleum products. In 1937, the company became a Phillips 66 marketer. FGO started the first “self-service” gas station in Russellville under the guidance of William G. (Bill) Blackwell in 1976. The first PDQ Super Convenience Store was built in 1981.

When their son, Avery Shinn, returned from serving in the military in World War II, he and his wife, Ferne McFerrin Shinn, became active in the family business in 1946.
